Kevin Wicks and Nick McKnight emerged as champions in the final two rounds of the Men’s League playoffs on Sunday with some thrilling moments, despite extreme temperatures!
The first semi-final round of the day featured two father/son teams pairing off. Kurt and Will Whiton were tied with Doug and Wil Stetzel after the first six holes, with the Whiton’s picking up four strokes in the final three holes. Will Whiton fired a net 34 to help seal the win.
The second semi-final match ended with another exciting finish. Due to the 90° temperature, only a few spectators witnessed the match of Wicks and McKnight versus Kendall Rathje and Steve Stammer. Despite trailing by ten strokes after the first six holes, Rathje and Stammer picked up nine strokes in the final three holes to fall by just one stroke to the eventual champs! Rathje fired the lowest score of the day with a net 32.
The second round of the day for the Whiton’s and the Wicks/McKnight team, and rising temperatures, made the Championship round more challenging. The Whiton’s, giving 10 handicap strokes to their opponents, picked up four strokes in the first three holes. The heat may have played a role in the final six holes as the two teams traded pars, bogies and double bogies down the stretch. Wicks finished the final hole with a tap in birdie, and a net 36, to cap a seven-stroke victory. Congratulations to both teams!
